Heriz carpet

Definition

Durable, geometric village carpets from the Heris area of East Azerbaijan, with large angular medallions.

History

Heriz rugs became popular in Europe and America from the late 19th century for their hard-wearing wool and bold geometric designs.

Technique

Symmetrical (Turkish) knots, thick pile and designs woven from memory or simple drawings, which gives them their angular look.

Collecting and identification

Heriz rugs are valued for durability; check for even wear and past repairs. 'Heriz style' rugs made in other countries are common.
