The carving of marble, limestone, alabaster and softer stones for architectural elements, gravestones, inscriptions and vessels.
History
Iran has a long lineage of stone carving, from Achaemenid reliefs to Islamic-period tombstones and architectural fittings; many later objects are dated by inscriptions.
Dates and attributions here summarise common scholarly positions and are under editorial review; they are not definitive.
Technique
Carvers rough out forms with chisels, then refine detail with smaller tools, files and abrasives; inscriptions are laid out by calligraphers before carving.
Collecting and identification
Surface weathering, re-cut inscriptions and composite repairs matter; stone type identification needs specialists.
