How to buy Filigree (Malileh)

• Hand-engraved lines have small variations in depth and direction; cast or machine-stamped designs are perfectly uniform.
• Check for hallmarks or purity stamps on silver and gold, and ask what they mean.
• Enamel should be glossy and even, with no bubbles lifting from the base.
• Inspect joints and solder points for quality.

Typical materials: silver, copper.

• 'Silver-tone' or 'silver-coloured' wording (means plated or base metal).
• Very light weight for the size.
• Cast reproductions of engraved designs.

A genuine Filigree (Malileh) piece should come with a named place of making in Iran (often isfahan, sistan-baluchestan) and a clear statement that it is handmade.

• What is the metal and its purity?
• Was the decoration engraved or cast?
• Is the piece plated?

• Polish silver gently with a soft cloth; avoid harsh dips on enamel or engraved areas.
• Keep enamel away from knocks and sudden heat.
• Remove jewellery before swimming, cleaning or applying perfume.

• Store silver in anti-tarnish cloth or a closed box.
