Rasht-duzi: the felt appliqué and chain-stitch of Gilan

Editorial team · به‌روزرسانی 2026-10-03

What it looks like

A Rasht-duzi panel is a mosaic of coloured wool felt or broadcloth pieces, joined and outlined with chain stitch worked with a hook (qollab). Additional stitched details — stems, leaves, birds — are filled in over the top.

Uses

Historically it decorated saddle cloths, floor covers, cushions and wall hangings. Contemporary workshops in Rasht make cushion covers, small hangings and table runners.

Quality signs

  • Tight, even chain stitch with no gaps between felt pieces
  • Clean outlines around every colour change
  • A firm backing fabric
  • Natural-fibre felt rather than synthetic craft felt

Care

Vacuum gently through a mesh screen; never wet-wash, as felt colours may bleed and shrink. Protect from moths with regular inspection.
