Framing and displaying Persian miniatures and illuminated pages
Editorial team · بهروزرسانی 2026-10-12
Why paper works are fragile
Persian miniatures and illuminated pages are made with pigments, gold and ink on paper. Light fades some colours, damp causes mould and acidic boards stain the paper. Some old pigments, such as verdigris green, can also eat into paper over time.
Framing basics
- Use acid-free museum board for the mount and backing
- Hinge the page with Japanese tissue and a reversible paste, never tape
- Leave a gap between the glazing and the surface
- Choose UV-filtering acrylic or glass
- Seal the back against dust
Light and location
Hang the work away from direct sunlight, bathrooms and kitchens. Low light is best; some owners swap works around so each has rest periods. Avoid outside walls that can be cold and damp.
Handling
Hold a sheet with clean, dry hands at the edges, or slide it onto a board. Never roll or fold an old page. Do not touch gold or painted areas.
Old or new?
Contemporary miniatures by living Iranian painters are original works; prints and reproductions are not. Ask the seller to say clearly which you are buying, and keep any signature or studio documentation.
