Displaying Iranian glass and ceramics safely
Editorial team · بهروزرسانی 2026-10-12
Secure display
Use stable shelves with a lip, or museum wax under bases to stop pieces sliding. In earthquake-prone areas, cabinets should be fixed to the wall and have closing doors. Keep pieces out of reach of children and pets.
Light and heat
Glass can magnify sunlight, which can damage nearby materials or start a fire. Avoid sunny windowsills and hot spotlights. Sudden temperature changes can crack glass and glaze.
Cleaning
- Dust with a soft brush
- Wash sound, unrestored pieces by hand in lukewarm water with a little mild soap
- Never put old, restored or lustre-decorated pieces in water
- Do not use the dishwasher for handmade glass or decorated ceramics
Food safety
Some traditional and decorative glazes may contain lead. Unless the maker states that a piece is food-safe, use decorative ceramics for display only, especially for acidic foods and drinks.
Buying tip
Hand-blown glass often shows a pontil mark on the base and small bubbles; this is normal. Ask the seller whether a piece was blown by hand, and where.
