Caring for khatam, moarraq and carved wood at home
Editorial team · بهروزرسانی 2026-10-12
What these objects are made of
Khatam is made of tiny pieces of wood, bone, metal and sometimes shell, glued into rods, sliced and laid onto a wooden core. A lacquer or varnish usually seals the surface. Moarraq uses larger cut pieces, and monabbat is carved wood. All of them move with changes in humidity.
Main risks
- Very dry air or radiators: cracks and lifting pieces
- Direct sun: faded and yellowed lacquer
- Water and household sprays: clouded finish and loose pieces
- Knocks to corners, where inlay chips first
Cleaning
Dust with a soft dry brush or cloth. Do not use polish, oils, silicone sprays or wet cloths. If the lacquer is clouded or pieces are lifting, take it to a furniture conservator or skilled workshop rather than gluing it yourself.
Display and storage
Keep pieces away from heaters, air-conditioning outlets and sunny windowsills. Moderate, steady humidity is best. Do not overload hinges on boxes, and line the inside rather than storing heavy or damp items in it.
Buying tip
Look closely at corners and edges for gaps or lifting. Printed paper or plastic imitations exist, so check with a magnifier that the pattern is built from separate pieces.
